Linda Kay Kates Obituary

Linda Kay Fisher (Kates)

1943 - 2020

Linda Kay Fisher Kates, 76, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2020. Born in Detroit on April 10, 1943, she was the middle daughter of the late Jack and Anna Fisher. She graduated from Mumford High School in 1961 and earned a B.A. in Journalism from Wayne State University in 1966. While in college, she worked on the student newspaper as a reporter and editor. She was also president of the WSU chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, a national fraternity for women in journalism.

Linda had several jobs over the years. After college, she was an employment counselor for the State of Michigan. She later took a job with Gibson Greetings, working her way up from merchandiser to district coordinator. Before retiring, she worked as the much-loved receptionist of a nursing home to be closer to her father, who resided there. She was a devoted caregiver to both her parents before their deaths.

Linda's hobbies included gardening, crafting, traveling, and cooking. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She was a loving mother to Lisa (Jim) Weldy and Julie Kates; grandmother to Aaron and Rachel Weldy; sister to the late Carol (Harold) Baker and Nancy (Larry) Kornwise; and aunt to six nieces and nephews. She was married to George Kates for 30 years and was later the beloved companion of the late Jerome Janssens for 24 years.

Contributions in Linda's memory may be made to the International Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Foundation (iwmf.com).
